Welcome to Greece
A warm and sunny day in Spring gathered the Erasmus+ "Utilizing the computers as a tool in studying- own knowledge acquiring” project partners to the 3rd mobility which was held on the 20th-26th of March in Thessaloniki, Greece and was devoted for “Digital age for better Maths”.
The digital Maths lessons CLIL were performed during the whole visit. Kaunas John Paul II gymnasium represented the Lithuanian team and performed two lessons under the titles: "Percentages and their applicability in real life” and "Roman Numerals”. The team from Bulgaria presented the lessons about "coordination systems” and "speed and velocity” . The Turkish team taught us how to pull the square roots and how to calculate the dimensions of the circle. The hosts of the meeting - Greeks, introduced us with the great Greek mathematicians: Pythagoras and Eratosthenes, and their activities. The project participants not also were introduced with the well-known mathematicians but also had the opportunity to do the Eratosthenes experiment using the sunshine, a wooden stick and a ruler to calculate distances. It was very interesting experience.
Thessaloniki has a rich history which is worth visiting. The city has a lot of sights from various history periods: Ancient, Macedonian, Byzantine, Ottoman Empires. These various signs could be easily noticed and investigated in the famous places in the city such as: Antiquity and Byzantine times in museums, Roman Rotunda, the Greek St. Basilica of Demetrius, Panagia Doxia temple, the ancient hippodrome, the Roman Forum, thermal baths and Turkish hammams.
The main symbol of the city is the White Tower which reveals the beauty of the Aegean Sea. Alongside, Thermos Bay surrounded by the mountains and the pulsating city life of the nearby coastline Nea Paralia.
The last day of the journey was crowned by a trip to the hanging Metheory Monastery, which is the UNESCO heritage sight. The old church is the pride of the Agiou Stefanou monastery, which walls were decorated with frescoes, not to mention the museum inside. Nevertheless, the most beautiful thing you can see while visiting the monastery is the mountains’ view and the skyline of Kalambaka town. There is also a nature history museum with the mushrooms and animals to be displayed. The visit to this museum was included in our planned tours, it was worth visiting.
A week in Greece passed by very fast. We are very thankful to the project coordinator Kyriaki (Kiki) for her warm welcome, smile and good mood. We are looking forward to meeting in Turkey in May.
